Say Goodbye to Bad Breath: How Yogurt Can Combat Foul Odors

January 16, 2024

Do you experience morning breath when you wake up? Has your spouse or partner cringed at the foul odor coming from your mouth? This unfortunate reality that haunts many individuals might occur only after consuming a cup of coffee or garlicky pizza; however, when the stench lingers after brushing, flossing, and rinsing, the problem might be more serious. Keep reading to find out what might be causing your bad breath and why yogurt might be your best weapon for combatting it.

Bad Breath Culprits: What Causes It?

It’s not unusual to consume certain foods and beverages and experience an unpleasant smell afterward. Onions, garlic, and coffee can be to blame; however, the odor can usually be remedied by practicing good oral hygiene habits, like brushing, flossing, and rinsing.

When the problem doesn’t dissipate, though, it may be that halitosis – the clinical term for “bad breath” and is a common yet treatable condition – is the ultimate culprit. The American Dental Association believes that at some point, half of adults in the U.S. are affected.

It’s believed that halitosis forms as a result of:

  • Smoking or using tobacco products
  • Poor oral hygiene habits
  • Dry mouth
  • Various health conditions, such as GERD
  • A low-carb diet
  • Leftover food inside your mouth (i.e., onions, garlic, etc.)

What Makes Yogurt a Powerhouse Odor Fighter?

It might seem odd to stock up on yogurt if you want to get rid of bad breath, but the experts explain what makes this delicious snack so beneficial.

First, yogurt contains helpful probiotics that are not only good for your gut but also your oral health. Believe it or not, it can help minimize bacterial growth and lower hydrogen sulfide, which is a compound that forms inside the mouth and leads to bad breath.

Another great benefit of yogurt is that it also reduces your chances of plaque and gum disease, both of which can have a negative effect on your oral and overall health if left untreated.

Are There Other Ways to Fight Bad Breath?

Yes! Eating yogurt is certainly worth the investment the next time you visit the grocery store; however, there are other helpful tips to keep in mind as well, such as:

  • Practicing and sticking to a good oral hygiene routine each day that includes brushing for two minutes, twice a day, flossing at least once before bed, and rinsing with an antimicrobial mouthwash.
  • Keeping your biannual dental checkups and cleanings with your dentist.
  • Eating healthy, nutritious foods that protect against bad breath, gum disease, and decay (i.e., low-fat dairy, leafy greens, fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, etc.)
  • Drinking a lot of water as opposed to coffee, soda, tea, and sports drinks, as it prevents dry mouth
  • Cleaning your tongue while taking care of your teeth and gums

Incorporating sugarless yogurt into your daily routine will not only improve your digestive system and gut health but also keep you from becoming embarrassed by your breath. Don’t hesitate to ask your dentist for suggestions on ways to maintain a fresher smile.
