A straighter smile is something most people desire. However, many do not want to walk around with bulky metal brackets and wires showing. While traditional braces have their advantages, advancements in dentistry now make it possible to pursue alternative solutions such as veneers or Invisalign. When talking to your dentist about your options, you may be unsure about which one to choose. Fortunately, this article is designed to further explain each service so that you can feel more confident about your preferred method of care when preparing for a consultation.

Veneers 101: What You Should Know

You may not realize that veneers are ideal restorative solutions that can easily cover crooked, gapped, or slightly misaligned teeth.

Custom-made to cover the front surfaces of teeth, veneers are designed to mimic the look of natural tooth enamel, so it’s virtually impossible for others to notice that you’re wearing them.

When it comes to choosing veneers to straighten your smile, there are a few things you must consider:

  • Veneers are helpful if you’re looking to improve the aesthetics of your smile. As a form of cosmetic treatment, they are not made to address the health or function of your teeth.
  • Veneers do require that a small portion of tooth enamel be removed for placement. This means that treatment cannot be reversed, so you’ll be required to maintain your veneers for a lifetime.
  • Veneers can help to improve your confidence and last up to 15 years with proper care.
  • Veneers do require that you do not have additional oral health issues (i.e., gum disease, tooth decay). Otherwise, you’ll need additional treatment to improve the health of your smile first.

Invisalign 101: Here Are the Facts

Invisalign is a form of orthodontic treatment. Unlike veneers that are considered a cosmetic solution, Invisalign works to straighten teeth that appear crooked, crowded, gapped, or misaligned.

Made of clear plastic, these custom aligners are crafted to shift teeth into the proper position. Apply gentle, continuous pressure, the trays are worn 20-22 hours each day for 1-2 weeks at a time. As time passes, each set must be swapped out for the next until desired results are achieved (typically between 12-18 months).

Invisalign can be an ideal option if:

  • You want to do more than just improve the aesthetics of your smile. You also want to fix the alignment of your teeth to allow for greater function and oral health.
  • You want a form of treatment that does not alter your tooth structure (i.e., the removal of tooth enamel).
  • You prefer a solution that produces lifelong results and does not have to be performed again and again over the years.
  • If you want a more discreet form of orthodontic care because you’re being recommended for braces.
  • You don’t mind paying more for results that can last a lifetime.

The only way to know for sure which option is right for you is to schedule a consultation with your dentist. This visit will allow you to weigh the pros and cons of each and decide how you want to pursue treatment and ultimately see a new and improved, straighter smile.
