There is one on each side of the jaw. TMJ disorder (TMD) occurs when these joints aren’t functioning properly, leading to discomfort of the jaw and the surrounding structures in the head. Fortunately, BOTOX has been successful at providing temporary relief for pain related to TMD. However, it isn’t uncommon for patients to experience bruising as a side effect. Here’s what causes it and how you can avoid it.

What Causes BOTOX Bruising?

BOTOX bruising is usually a result of blood extravasation. This is when blood leaks from a blood vessel into the surround tissue. This can happen when the BOTOX needle punctures a blood vessel. Blood vessels are numerous, so this can happen from time to time. It can appear right away or one to two days after your treatment. If bruising occurs, it usually lasts anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks.

How Can You Avoid BOTOX Bruising?

Anytime you receive an injection, there is a risk of bruising. However, there are some steps you can take to lower your risk.

Avoid Blood-Thinning Medications & Supplements

Some medications and supplements can slow down the platelets that stop bleeding and bruising. If your platelets don’t get to the broken capillaries and blood vessels after an injection, your chances of bruising increase. If you take a blood thinner as a regular medication, be sure to talk to your doctor before discontinuing use.

Don’t Drink Alcohol Before & After Your Treatment

Alcohol causes blood vessels to relax and open. Even just a glass of wine or shot of whisky can trigger this effect, increasing your risk of bruising. These effects are short lived, so you only need to avoid drinking for 24 hours before and after your treatment to reduce your risk.

Apply a Cold Compress

Using an ice pack or cold compress on the injection site constricts your blood vessels, slowing the flow of blood. This helps to reduce the risk of bruising from injections. This also helps to numb the area, eliminating lingering discomfort from the needle.

Avoid Vigorous Exercise

Exercise is great for your heart and overall health! However, increasing your heart rate and blood flow can worsen bruising. By avoiding vigorous exercise for just a couple of days after your treatment, you can help the area recover faster.

BOTOX can help to reduce discomfort associated with TMD. By trying out the steps listed above, you can help to lessen your risk of bruising in addition to getting some relief!

About the Practice

At J.B.
